Sport Management, (MSM)

Graduates of the Master of Sport Management program are well suited for a wide swath of occupations within the industry including management, marketing, coaching, facilities management, analytics, sales, event planning, and a range of public relations and broadcasting categories. The 30=credit hour program can be completed in one year beginning in the fall term and culminating in a summer internship. The program is 100% online and composed of eight 3-hour courses and one 6-hour internship. 

Program Admission

Applicants to the Master of Sport Management program must meet all Common Admission Requirements as outlined in the main Master Degrees  section.

Additional Admission Requirements

All applicants to the Tusculum University Master of Sport Management Program must:

  1. Submit a completed application to the Master of Sport Management program.
  2. Submit a current resume.
  3. Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  4. Satisfy one of the following:
    1. Minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or
    2. Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours.

Conditional Admission

Applicants who meet all other Master of Sport Management admission requirements but lack the required minimum GPA specified in 5A or 5B above may be considered for conditional admission. To be considered for conditional admission, applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  1. Minimum GPA of 2.75-2.99 in the last 60 hours or
  2. Minimum GPA of 2.5-2.74 in the last 60 hours, submit an essay (500-word limit) explaining your desire to obtain a Master of Sport Management degree. Include a summary of any experience you have had in the world of sport, and obtain Dean recommendation.

*Conditionally admitted students must earn a B- or higher in all courses during their first semester to remain in the program.

Assessment of Program Coursework

  1. All students in this program are required to have an account for LiveText, a web-based electronic portfolio service. The subscription access code card for LiveText is will be emailed to your Tusculum account the third week of your first semester of coursework. Your LiveText account is valid for 7 years and will be used throughout your program for submission of course-based Key Assignments in your courses. Key Assignments are used to evaluate your progress toward meeting program and applicable state and/ or national standards and to inform program improvement. Once your assignment is uploaded to your portfolio, it will be assessed by your instructor using a 4-point rubric (4=Exemplary, 3=Proficient, 2=Developing Proficiency, 1=Not Proficient). Key Assignments do not require a minimum score but must be uploaded to LiveText to receive a passing grade in the course.
  2. MSM Graduate Students are expected to earn a minimum grade of B- or better for a course to count toward the major. Students are allowed only one grade of C+ or C to count towards graduation. In addition, a 3.0 cumulative GPA is required for graduation with a master’s degree.

Graduate Research Requirement


Each graduate program at Tusculum University contains a research requirement, which engages students in the study and application of methods of problem identification; the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and recommendation of problem resolutions relative to their professional disciplines. Examples of these graduate studies include empirical research, study of and resolution of an organizational performance gap, or completion of an action research project. For the Master of Sport Management (MSM) graduate degree program, MSM 570 - Research Methods And Design In Sport  serves as its graduate research requirement. In this course, students will read and critique a range of research articles and will develop a research proposal using appropriate methodologies and methods of inquiry.
